Keynote 1: Diversifying the Family Wealth by Building the Next Generation of Stars

DEEN SHEIKH, Gen2
Managing Director
Progressive Traders Private Limited
Pakistan

A family’s values, culture, talent and reputation are at the heart of its wealth portfolio, anchoring and driving the family’s pursuit of wealth for current and future generations.

Many business families are facing a new reality in terms of how they create wealth and allocate their capital. After a lifetime of having the family’s wealth almost entirely bound up in their legacy business, business families are recognizing that they need to de-risk and diversify their wealth in today’s more volatile and unpredictable environment.

Business families need a playbook to weather future shocks and position themselves to be strong and flourish. Multigenerational families who want to play the long game need to prepare the next generation of stars.

Protecting the family legacy and passing on multi-generational wealth may not necessarily mean reinvesting in the legacy business. Family businesses are recognizing that the legacy business may not be for the next generation.

Many of the next generation are interested in seeking ways to create their own independent wealth. There should be proper governance to ensure the family is able to support the independent wealth creation opportunities among the family members.

Drawing from the insights gathered from in-depth interviews with family business owners and leaders, they will explore the strategies and best practices for addressing the emotional strain that often accompanies the dual roles of family members and business leaders. And will validate their findings through a real-life case study and participants’ engagement.

They will examine how to establish effective emotional support systems, recognize the signs of emotional burnout, and foster a culture of empathy and emotional intelligence within the family businesses. Furthermore, they will discuss the importance of setting clear boundaries between family and business relationships, ensuring that personal relationships do not compromise professional decisions, and striking a balance between family hierarchy and business hierarchy to maintain respect and efficiency.

By the end of this master class, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of managing emotions and relationships in family businesses and acquire practical tools and strategies to navigate these challenges, ultimately leading to healthier relationships and a more successful business.
